Kim Jong Min Goes Up Against an AI on “2 Days & 1 Night”
Though Kim Jong Min lost a game to the artificial intelligence program Yixin on March 27′s episode of “2 Days & 1 Night,” the moment turned out to be the minute with the highest ratings.
In the episode, the crew travels to Haenam for a spring executive field trip. Once they arrive, they play a game with lunch as the prize. After passing the empathy and class test, the last obstacle they must overcome is an observation evaluation through a game of omok (which is also known as “Five in a Row”) with AI program, Yixin.
The captions add to the comedy of the show with lines like “The most embarrassing game to go down in history” and “An easy round for Yixin.”
Kim Jong Min is the team’s representative, previously having said, “I’ve never lost to a computer before.”
Despite his confidence, however, he doesn’t even know where to place the stones on the board and ends up making moves that nobody would ever even imagine. The rest of the members burst out into laughter at his absurdity. Anticipating that this might be their last chance, they scream, “Even if you die, make sure you attack before going down!”
Unfortunately, the moment Cha Tae Hyun compliments Kim Jong Min, he immediately falls for a trap. Once his approaching defeat becomes apparent, he turns off the monitor and hastily ends the game, and the group fails to receive a special lunch. Although the “2 Days & 1 Night” team lost all five games against Yixin, they managed to give the crowd a good laugh.
According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research company, “2 Days & 1 Night” had the highest ratings out of all the Sunday variety shows, with a whopping 16.8 percent. The moment when Kim Jong Min loses to Yixin and rage quits (19:36) was marked to have the highest ratings at 20.8 percent.
